Leigh & District Rambling Club established in 1981 (Affiliated to the Ramblers' Association)
Associate Membership (for Car Walks only)
At our recent AGM (annual general meeting) we decided to reopen club membership creating a new "Associate Membership" for Car walks only at a reduced rate of £10 per annum.
For your first walk there is no commitment to pay, simply come along and meet our friendly group.
After this should you wish to join the club as an Associate member we would like you to attend our next booking on meeting. This is on the Wednesday night prior to the Coach walks in the 'Gold Bar' of Leigh Miners’ Welfare Institute, Kirby Road, Leigh, Lancashire, WN7 4EF, from 7:00 til 8:00 pm approximately.
Car walk bookings are by text to the walk leader (details are shared with members only). Please text the walk leader by noon at the latest on the Saturday before the walk should you wish to join the walk.
Our car walks are more local and there are three different walks available ranging from 12 to 6 miles.
Please choose a walk that is appropriate for your current fitness level and wear suitable clothes and boots. Also bring enough food and drink for the day.
For our monthly Coach walks, at the moment these are still usually oversubscribed. However, as an "Associate member", in the event of any spaces being available, we will email you and there will be the option to join us on a first come first served basis. The cost per coach trip is £12 per person.
Full Membership (for Coach and Car Walks)
Membership costs. The current cost for joining the club is £20 per annum. We organise a mixture of Coach walks and Car walks. The cost per coach trip is £12 per person.
Unfortunately due to our Coach Walks normally being oversubscribed we have closed "full" membership for now.
Coach Walks
Coach Walk bookings are made on the Wednesday night prior to the Coach walks in the 'Gold Bar' of Leigh Miners’ Welfare Institute, Kirby Road, Leigh, Lancashire, WN7 4EF, from 7:00 til 8:00 pm approximately.
If you can't attend the meeting you can check availability by ringing a nominated contact number after 9:00 pm.
There are five different walks available on each coach trip. Walk 1 is the hardest with distances of 10 to 14 miles usually with some height involved, depending on the terrain. Walk 5 the easiest covering approximately 3.5 miles with minimal climbing being aimed at people starting or returning to walking and may be suitable for those recuperating from illness or injury. Additional height on any of the walks will result in distances being reduced to compensate.
Please choose a walk that is appropriate for your current fitness level and wear suitable clothes and boots. Also bring enough food and drink for the day.
The coach leaves from St Mary’s Way, St. Mary's Church, Leigh, WN7 1EB (opposite the Library) at 8.15am. There is an earlier pick up point from Lowton Social Club, Newton Road, WA3 2AQ which is used most trips. Journeys north and east also pick up at the last bus shelter lay-by on Park Road Westhoughton, before the Chequerbent roundabout BL5 3HU. Trips to the south-east may also pick up at the bus stop opposite the Miners Arms, Astley, M29 7DX.
Which pickup points are used, depends on the direction that the coach leaves Leigh, which itself depends on the destination for that day.
Please check the coach pick up points when booking on.
The departure time for the Coach from the destination is 4.00 pm in winter and 5:00 pm at other times.
The farthest destinations, usually visited in summer, can be up to 2 hours away. Winter destinations tend to be nearer.
